About Australia

Australia has 8 of the top 100 universities in the world, proof of its world-class education, work opportunities and academic excellence.

Vibrant cities, beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes are just some of the perks of studying here. Almost every view here is straight out of a Nat Geo magazine. What’s more, 5 of its major cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide made it to the list of 50 Most Liveable Places in the World 2021*. It’s also no surprise that Australia offers a multitude of degrees and majors at its top universities. Coupled with the great outdoors and post-study work opportunities, studying here is a prize in itself.

accomodation in nz for students

Accomodation

You won’t be stuck in class or campus the whole time, you’ll need a place to rest too. Which is where Vidyabroad comes in. There are 3 types of accommodation to pick from:

On-campus student residences: Unlike other universities in the world, Australia offers little or no on-campus housing. While there are residential colleges that offer furnished rooms with decent amenities, a majority of the students live off-campus because it is generally cheaper than university-managed accommodation. It can cost anywhere from 160 AUD to 470 AUD weekly for housing. However, limited as it is, on-campus housing comes with meals, electricity, internet, transport convenience, etc.

Homestays: Here, you’ll have the opportunity to stay with an Australian family. Homestays have been gaining popularity because of their authentic experiences and varying budgets . It typically includes meals, laundry facilities, internet, etc. And it is the best way to pick up local culture and the Aussie way of life.

Private accommodation: This can cost anywhere from 80 AUD to 440 AUD, depending on the city, area, etc. Transport costs may vary depending on how far it is from your university. You will have to figure out bills, groceries, and the many moods of a washing machine. But it’s worth it when you have the freedom to do as you like, for the most part.

We can find something that fits your budget and lifestyle. Contact your Vidyabroad counsellor to help you get started on student accommodation.

Cost of Education

Besides offering a quality education system, Australia offers an affordable education that is unmatched amongst its counterparts.

With attractive scholarship options and opportunities to work part-time, studying in Australia proves to be one of the better options a student can have. Like always, your tuition fees will make up the maximum chunk of your expenses. The average tuition fees range from AUD 20,000 and AUD 30,000 a year. Most commonly, courses in humanities, arts and education are more affordable than subjects like medicine or engineering. The second largest chunk of your expenses will be accommodation, the cost of which will depend on whether it is on-campus or off-campus. Apart from that, you will have to take into account the rest of your living expenses, health support and transport costs. Drawing up a financial plan doesn’t have to give you sleepless nights – feel free to contact your Vidyabroad counsellor for a solid plan, and a good night’s sleep.

Safety & Indian Community

Its stellar quality of life and the fact that 5 of its major cities are the most liveable places in the world, should tell you everything you need to know about safety in Australia.

Also, Indian students make up the second largest population of kids studying abroad. Needless to say, you’ll have plenty of reasons (and friends) to not miss home.

As safe and ‘at home’ as you may feel, you’ll need to take the usual precautions. As an international student, you’ll have access to various points of contact for any kind of emergency. Most universities here have 24×7 security, with CCTV cameras and guards. Various institutions also offer services like shuttles and security escorts to ensure you reach home safely after hours. Apart from that, do your own homework. Study your routes well. Always travel on well-lit streets. Keep all your documents safe. And stay connected with your friends and family. Enjoy, but responsibly.

For emergencies, call the toll free number 000. This is a common number that can be used for fire, police, ambulance or search and rescue. Interpreters are also available, in case you are unable to explain in English. For medical emergencies, you can call 0800 611 116.

Visa

You’ll need a student visa, of course

As an international student, you would most commonly require a student (subclass 500) visa, regardless of what course you’ve picked. You can apply no later than 6 weeks before your intended date of program’s start date.

To get your student visa, you’ll also have to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language. This means passing a secure English language test to be able to prove your communication and correspondence skills – usually The International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Australian educational institutions require a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 band in each of the 4 modules.
